Bitcoin breaks $85,000 as SEC clears tokenized equities

Bitcoin broke above $85,000 on Monday, extending a sharp rebound after the US Securities and Exchange Commission granted a five-year regulatory exemption to enable on-chain trading of tokenized US stocks. The move has lifted sentiment across crypto markets and drawn attention from traditional finance as regulators carve out a compliant path for blockchain-based equity trading.

SEC’s five-year ‘Innovation Exemption’ opens on-chain stock trading

  • Bitcoin climbed 5.7% in 24 hours to trade around $85,100 – $85,140 during Monday’s Asian and early US sessions, after dipping below $76,000 last week following the Federal Reserve’s rate hike.
  • The SEC on Thursday issued an “Innovation Exemption” allowing qualified Tokenized Securities Venues (TSVs) to trade tokenized National Market System (NMS) stocks on public blockchains without registering as national securities exchanges, subject to strict conditions.
  • The exemption is temporary, lasting five years, and is designed to facilitate innovation while preserving investor protections and market integrity.

Risk assets rally as regulatory overhang lifts

The regulatory clarity removed a key overhang on crypto-related equities and digital assets, signalling that US authorities are willing to accommodate blockchain-based market structures under defined guardrails.

  • Crypto-related stocks rallied: Coinbase (COIN) rose about 12% on Friday, MicroStrategy (MSTR) gained 16%, and Robinhood (HOOD) advanced 9%, reflecting expectations of new revenue streams from tokenized equities and related infrastructure.
  • Major tokens followed: Ethereum rose roughly 6%, XRP jumped more than 7%, Solana and Cardano each gained around 8% – 9%, and BNB climbed 5%.
  • Market participants interpreted the exemption as a step toward deeper integration of traditional assets with crypto liquidity pools, potentially expanding 24/7 trading access and fractional ownership.

Tokenized stocks: a regulated sandbox for 24/7 equity markets

The SEC’s move creates a regulated sandbox for real, rights-bearing tokenized stocks (with dividends and voting rights) to trade on permissioned automated market maker (AMM) pools, excluding synthetic price trackers.

Key implications:

  • New trading venues: Qualified US-based TSVs can list up to 75 large-cap symbols, with per-stock volume capped at 0.25% of average daily share volume, and must halt trading when primary exchanges do.
  • Issuer control: Companies can opt out by objecting to tokenization of their shares, limiting unilateral on-chain listing.
  • Infrastructure shift: The exemption brings crypto-style liquidity mechanisms (AMMs, liquidity pools) into the $70 – $75 trillion US equity market, potentially reshaping how shares are accessed and traded over time.

For Bitcoin and broader crypto, the decision reinforces a narrative of regulatory normalization and institutional adoption, supporting risk appetite even amid higher interest rates and elevated Treasury yields.

Cross-asset spillovers: equities flat, dollar firms as crypto hits 7‑month high

Bitcoin’s push to a seven- to eight-month high coincided with constructive risk sentiment, falling oil prices, and easing inflation concerns, which together supported both equities and digital assets.

  • US indices: The Nasdaq Composite posted a modest weekly gain (+0.7%), while the S&P 500 was roughly flat (-0.1%) and the Dow Jones fell 1.7% for the week ended September 18, reflecting sector rotation rather than broad risk-off pressure.
  • US dollar: The Dollar Index (DXY) strengthened over the week, closing around 100.26, up from 99.17, supported by the Fed’s hawkish tilt and rate differentials versus other major central banks.
  • Correlations: Bitcoin’s short-term correlation with the dollar and equities has been unstable, 15-day correlation with the DXY hovered near zero, while its link to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq moderated compared with earlier in the year.

In practice, Bitcoin‘s rally has not triggered a broad rotation out of US equities, instead, both asset classes have benefited from easing macro fears and constructive positioning into year-end.

Key signals for traders: venue launches, regulatory tweaks, macro backdrop

TSV launches and volumes: Watch for announced tokenized equity venues, eligible symbols, and early trading volumes as a gauge of real adoption versus speculative positioning.

Regulatory feedback: The SEC has solicited public comment, any adjustments to volume caps, issuer opt-out rules, or dealer exemptions could affect scalability.

Macro drivers: Treasury yields, oil prices, and Fed messaging remain key for risk assets, a stronger dollar or higher real yields could reassert headwinds for Bitcoin despite the regulatory tailwind.

ETF flows and positioning: Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows and futures positioning will influence near-term momentum, especially around technical levels above $85,000.

The SEC’s tokenization exemption marks a structural shift rather than a one-off catalyst. For crypto, it validates on-chain equity trading under US rules, for traditional markets, it opens a controlled experiment in 24/7, fractional, blockchain-based share trading that could reshape liquidity over the next five years.
