Nasdaq Movement Overview
The Nasdaq Composite closed sharply lower on Wednesday, falling 1.88% to 26,692.87 as of the close of the US session (04:00 UTC+8 on 15 October 2026). It was the index’s biggest daily drop since 23 July 2026. Hotter-than-expected US inflation data stirred worries that the Federal Reserve will need to raise rates further, pressuring AI-related stocks that are sensitive to higher borrowing costs.

Key Driver Behind The Move
US consumer prices accelerated in September as gasoline costs surged and price pressures broadened beyond energy, the Labor Department’s data showed. Increased bets on more Fed hikes hit some of the market’s biggest gainers of 2026. Oracle, CoreWeave and Nebius all tumbled. Adam Sarhan, chief executive of 50 Park Investments, said investors are unhappy because the report pressures the Fed to raise rates to combat inflation. Before the data came out, Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman had said the central bank has time to wait and see how markets and the economy evolve after its September rate rise.
Market Data And Reaction
Interest-rate traders now price a 37% chance of a Fed hike this month, up from 22% on Tuesday, according to CME’s FedWatch tool. The S&P 500 fell 1.11% to 7,718.94, its biggest one-day drop since 29 July 2026. The information technology sector led the declines, down 2.6%. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index dropped 4.3%, its sixth straight daily decline and its longest losing streak since May 2025. The Dow was little changed.
Broader Market Implications
The sell-off shows how dependent this year’s market gains are on AI stocks. The S&P 500 hit a record high last week, but most of its 2026 advance has come from AI-related shares, while many index members are in negative territory for the year. Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise sank after Barclays downgraded them. Bank of America fell after a lower third-quarter profit, and Morgan Stanley dropped despite higher profit. The S&P 500 Banks index closed at its lowest level since June.
