Aussie Dollar Goes for Gold: A Market Comeback to Cheer For!

As the Olympic Games approach their grand finale, it seems the Australian dollar (AUD) is ready to join the celebration. The AUD has put on a show, bouncing back above the US$0.65 mark with all the flair of a gymnast nailing a perfect routine. After hitting lows below US$0.6480, the Aussie dollar has sprung back to intraday highs just shy of US$0.6550, making investors cheer like they’re watching a gold medal performance.

Tuesday’s market action was all about risk appetite, and the AUD took full advantage. Despite a more serious tone from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)—which hinted that rate hikes are still a possibility and rate cuts are not on the menu—the Aussie dollar decided to flex its muscles. RBA Governor Michele Bullock wasn’t having any of those rate-cut fantasies, making it clear that the central bank is in no hurry to ease up on policy. With rising copper and iron ore prices adding extra pep to its step, the AUD had a solid support system.

The broader market was like a sports arena, with risk sentiment taking the spotlight. Commodity currencies like the Aussie were back in the game, while safe-haven assets like the yen took a bit of a breather. The yen slipped 0.4%, letting the USD inch back towards ¥144.80. Meanwhile, the euro and pound took a dive, with the pound slipping below US$1.27 and the euro heading towards US$1.09 before finding a bit of stability.

On the Aussie economic front, the Ai Group Australian Industry Index showed some positive momentum, bouncing from -25.6 in June to -20.7 in July. This suggests that Australia might be in for a bit of an economic upswing. But keep your eyes on China’s trade data—forecasted to show a 9.6% year-on-year increase in exports for July. A strong showing from China could give the AUD a nice boost, while weak import figures might throw a wrench in the works.

Just like the Olympic athletes are giving their all in the final stretch, make sure your trading strategy is in top shape.
