Crude Oil Movement Overview
Oil prices fell in early Asian trade on Monday as Iran outlined a plan that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days, provided Washington meets its conditions. As of 08:11 UTC+8 on 02 November 2026, Brent crude futures were at $111.84 a barrel, down 1.40%. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was at $102.56. The drop followed strong gains last week.

Key Driver Behind The Move
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Qatari mediators helped shorten Tehran’s earlier, longer timeline. Under the new plan, the United States would take its steps on the first day and shipping would resume on the second. On Sunday, Araghchi said the talks were ongoing and progressing.
US President Donald Trump said negotiations were going fine and that Iran wanted a deal, but that Washington was in no hurry. He also renewed threats against Iranian nuclear facilities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had not decided whether to launch new strikes and that a diplomatic settlement was still possible.
Market Data And Reaction
Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, described the move as a “technical pullback this morning after last week’s strong gains”. He said hopes of diplomatic progress had cooled prices.
US Central Command said its blockade of Iranian ports had redirected 144 commercial ships. Separately, Iran’s navy said a tanker caught fire after hitting mines east of Hormuz, without naming the vessel.
Broader Market Implications
Iran’s demands reportedly include sanctions relief, the release of frozen funds, restored oil waivers and a smaller US military presence in the region. Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei said a letter from US Vice President JD Vance suggested a more conciliatory US tone. He added that Tehran would not reopen the waterway until its conditions were met.
OPEC+ kept its December output targets unchanged at Sunday’s meeting. Separately, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei reportedly ordered commanders to prepare an immediate response to any attack.
