Oil Rebounds as Saudi Export Flows Recover From Hormuz Disruption

Oil Movement Overview

Oil prices edged higher on Wednesday, recovering some ground after a sharp selloff in the previous session. Brent crude futures rose 0.6% to $103.16 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.1% to $89.46 a barrel, as of 09:18 UTC+8 on 30 September 2026. The rebound came as signs of recovering Middle East export flows offset lingering concerns over continued disruption through the Strait of Hormuz.

Key Driver Behind The Move

The rebound was driven by Saudi Arabia’s resumption of crude loadings at its Red Sea port of Yanbu, following the restart of its East-West Pipeline. Saudi Arabia has restored flows through the pipeline to at least 3.5 million barrels per day, around half its capacity, providing an alternative export route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz entirely. Saudi Aramco has also notified customers of its October loading schedule, reinforcing the sense that regional supply is stabilizing after weeks of disruption.

Market Data And Reaction

Both benchmarks had fallen sharply in the prior session, extending a stretch of volatility tied to the ongoing Hormuz standoff. The waterway remains a key source of uncertainty: diplomatic efforts to reopen it have yet to produce a breakthrough, with Qatar mediating between Washington and Tehran on a potential agreement. President Trump has rejected reports that Washington offered Iran sanctions relief, while Tehran continues to link any reopening to its own conditions. Separately, the US has offered to loan as much as 40 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve as part of a broader effort to ease supply disruptions.

Broader Market Implications

The recovery in Saudi export capacity has reduced some of the immediate supply risk stemming from the conflict, but it hasn’t resolved the underlying standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, which continues to keep a risk premium embedded in prices. Despite Wednesday’s rebound, Brent remains on course for a substantial monthly gain, underscoring how unsettled the broader supply picture remains even as alternative export routes come back online.

What Oil Traders Should Watch

  • Progress or setbacks in Qatar-mediated talks between Washington and Tehran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz
  • Further Saudi shipping and pipeline data confirming the durability of the Yanbu export recovery
  • Details on the scale and timing of the proposed Strategic Petroleum Reserve loan
  • Any response from Iran to the US rejection of the sanctions-relief report
