Trump-Xi Summit This Week Clouds the Global Economy

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to meet in Washington on 24 Sept, with trade, tariffs, technology and geopolitical tensions expected to dominate the agenda. The summit comes as investors assess whether the world’s two largest economies can extend a fragile trade truce without reopening broader supply-chain and market risks.

Trade Truce Takes Centre Stage

A key issue for markets will be whether Washington and Beijing extend the tariff truce reached last year, which is due to expire on 10 Nov. The agreement helped prevent an escalation of tariffs that had previously exceeded 100% on some goods and raised concerns over global supply chains.

The two sides are also discussing potential tariff reductions covering about $30 billion of goods on each side. Washington is seeking increased Chinese purchases of U.S. products, including agricultural goods and Boeing aircraft, while Beijing is pushing for greater access to advanced U.S. technology.

Technology And Critical Minerals Add To The Stakes

Technology is another major area of uncertainty. Beijing wants Washington to ease restrictions that limit Chinese companies’ access to advanced U.S. technology, while the United States is pressing China to maintain the flow of rare earths and other critical minerals.

The issue has direct implications for semiconductor and technology companies because rare earth materials remain important to advanced manufacturing and defence industries. Recent talks between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng also included discussions on AI safety, suggesting technology cooperation could form part of the summit agenda.

Global Markets Face Multiple Transmission Channels

The summit could affect several financial markets through changes in trade policy, supply-chain conditions and geopolitical risk.

Market

Key Issue

Potential Market Transmission

US & Chinese Equities

Tariffs, technology restrictions and trade conditions

Changes in corporate costs, export access and investor sentiment

US Dollar & Chinese Yuan

Trade balance and policy uncertainty

Shifts in expectations for bilateral trade and capital flows

Industrial Commodities

Chinese demand and global supply chains

Changes in manufacturing and infrastructure demand

Oil

China’s energy demand and Iran-related discussions

Changes in expectations for Chinese demand and energy trade

Semiconductors

US technology controls and Chinese access

Potential changes in supply-chain and revenue expectations

Chinese blue-chip stocks gained 0.6% on Monday, while South Korea’s technology-heavy index rose 1.5%. S&P 500 futures were up 0.4% and Nasdaq futures gained 0.6%, although these moves also reflected broader factors including easing oil prices and technology demand.

Agriculture, Energy And Iran Also In Focus

Agricultural trade is one area where both sides have room for potential agreements. China is on track to meet a commitment to purchase 25 million metric tonnes of U.S. soybeans annually through 2028, while additional purchases of U.S. agricultural products could become part of the negotiations.

Energy could also feature in the discussions. U.S. oil and gas exports to China have been disrupted by tariffs, while Washington is also seeking Beijing’s cooperation over Iran. China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, giving the relationship an additional link to global energy markets.

What Traders Should Watch

Traders will focus first on any agreement to extend the tariff truce and whether the two governments announce concrete changes to tariffs or trade restrictions. Details on agricultural purchases, Boeing orders and rare earth exports could provide further indications of the direction of bilateral trade.

Markets will also monitor developments involving Taiwan, Iran and technology controls. Any changes in these areas could affect risk sentiment, supply-chain expectations and demand for major currencies, equities and commodities. The summit’s outcome will therefore be assessed not only for immediate trade measures, but also for whether it reduces or prolongs uncertainty between the world’s two largest economies.
